About the Ashrama

Sri Sarada Devi – The Holy Mother (1853–1920)

Sri Sarada Devi was the spiritual consort of Sri Ramakrishna Paramahansa and a central figure in the Ramakrishna Movement. Revered by millions as the embodiment of the Divine Mother, she is remembered for her simplicity, compassion, and silent spiritual strength.

Also Known As Holy Mother (Sri Ma)
Philosophy Advaita Vedanta · Universal Love
Key Quality Unconditional Compassion
Legacy Spiritual Mother of the Ramakrishna Order
Early Life
  • Birth: December 22, 1853, in the quiet village of Jayrambati, West Bengal.
  • Parents: Ramachandra Mukhopadhyay and Syamasundari Devi, known for their piety and kindness despite their poverty.
  • Marriage: Betrothed to Sri Ramakrishna at the age of five. She lived with her parents until eighteen, when she walked barefoot to Dakshineswar to join her husband.
Spiritual Partnership

Unlike traditional marriages, their union was entirely spiritual. Sri Ramakrishna worshipped Sarada Devi as Sodashi (the Divine Mother) during a sacred ritual, recognizing her as a source of infinite wisdom.

She served Sri Ramakrishna and his devotees with tireless devotion. After his passing in 1886, she became the spiritual guide and "Mother" to the monastic disciples and householder devotees alike.

Her Teachings and Legacy
  • Universal Motherhood: She accepted everyone—regardless of caste, creed, or merit—as her own child.
  • Simplicity: She lived a humble life, performing household duties while remaining in constant prayer.
  • Silent Teaching: Her life itself was her message; she taught more through actions than words.
“If you want peace of mind, do not find fault with others. Rather learn to see your own faults. Learn to make the whole world your own. No one is a stranger, my child: the whole world is your own.”

Sri Ramakrishna Paramahansa (1836–1886)

Sri Ramakrishna Paramahansa was one of the most influential spiritual masters of the 19th century. His life was a living testament to the harmony of all religions and the direct realization of God.

Birth Name Gadadhar Chattopadhyay
Key Philosophy Harmony of Religions (Universalism)
Spiritual Consort Sri Sarada Devi
Primary Teaching God-realization is the true goal of life
Early Life and “Gadadhar”
  • Birth: February 18, 1836, in Kamarpukur, West Bengal, as Gadadhar Chattopadhyay.
  • Childhood: Even as a boy, he experienced spiritual ecstasies while observing nature or participating in religious plays.
  • Dakshineswar: At the age of 20, he became the priest at the Dakshineswar Kali Temple, where his intense longing for a vision of the Divine Mother began.
The Great Synthesis

Sri Ramakrishna was unique not because he studied religions intellectually, but because he practiced them in depth. Through years of intense sadhana, he realized the ultimate Truth through multiple paths.

  • Hinduism: He mastered the paths of Bhakti (devotion), Tantra, and Advaita Vedanta.
  • Other Faiths: He practiced the essential disciplines of Islam and Christianity, concluding that all religions lead to the same Divine Truth.
  • Realization: His famous realization was Jato-mat-tato-path — “As many faiths, so many paths.”
Master and Disciple

Though he lived simply and spoke in rustic parables, Sri Ramakrishna attracted some of the greatest minds of his time.

  • His most renowned disciple was Swami Vivekananda, whom he transformed from a skeptic into a world-renowned spiritual leader.
  • He taught the ideal of “Service to man is service to God” (Shiva Jnane Jiva Seva), which continues to inspire humanitarian work worldwide.
Final Days and Legacy

Sri Ramakrishna passed away on August 16, 1886, leaving behind a timeless legacy of religious tolerance, universal love, and spiritual realization.

He did not write books; his conversations and teachings were faithfully recorded by his disciple “M.” in the immortal work The Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna.

“As many faiths, so many paths.”

Swami Vivekananda (1863–1902)

Swami Vivekananda was a monk, a philosopher, and a visionary leader. He is best known for introducing the Indian philosophies of Vedanta and Yoga to the Western world and for being the chief disciple of Sri Ramakrishna Paramahansa.

Early Life and “Naren”
  • Birth: Born as Narendranath Datta on January 12, 1863, in Calcutta, into an aristocratic family.
  • Intellect: From a young age, he was brilliant in academics, music, and sports. He had a restless, logical mind and was constantly searching for the truth about God.
The Turning Point

Narendranath’s life changed profoundly when he met Sri Ramakrishna and asked him directly, “Sir, have you seen God?” The master replied, “Yes, I have. I see Him as clearly as I see you.”

The Chicago Speech (1893)

After his Guru’s passing and a period of traveling across India as a wandering monk, he represented Hinduism at the first World’s Parliament of Religions in Chicago.

Beginning his address with the words “Sisters and Brothers of America!”, he received a standing ovation and instant global recognition as a powerful voice of universal spirituality.

The Inspiration

Importance of Mother First

Letter of Swami Vivekananda

Ref: Letters of Swami Vivekananda

Armed with inspiration from the divine trio and spiritual masters, Kripamayi Sharadashrama has embarked upon a multitude of activities with the spirit of seva.

The teachings of Swami Vivekananda emphasize that without the awakening of Shakti, there can be no regeneration of the individual or society. Reverence to the Mother is therefore not symbolic, but the very foundation of spiritual life.

Inspired by this vision, the Ashrama works in diverse areas of education, health, women empowerment, ethical living, and spiritual guidance. Service here is not an activity confined to time or place, but a way of life.

Seva Activities

“Seva is one of the hallmarks of the Institution to serve the needy”

Kripamayi Sharadashrama, along with dedicated volunteers, undertakes various seva programmes based on the needs of society, especially for under-served and vulnerable communities.

During the COVID-19 pandemic and continuing afterwards, the Ashrama actively carried out several humanitarian service activities to support those who were severely affected by the crisis.

The organization extended help to disabled children, residents of leprosy colonies, and destitute individuals by providing essential assistance and compassionate care.

As part of these service initiatives, Kripamayi Sharadashrama organized:

  • Blanket distribution programs for needy individuals during the winter season.

Children Camp Activities

The Children Camps conducted at the Ashrama provide a joyful and inspiring environment where young participants learn valuable life lessons through spiritual guidance and interactive activities. During the camp, children gather together to listen to teachings, participate in discussions, and learn about the importance of discipline, respect, and good values.

Under the guidance of revered teachers, children are introduced to the teachings of Indian culture and scriptures in a simple and engaging manner. Group sessions, storytelling, devotional singing, and value-based activities help children develop confidence, focus, and a positive outlook towards life.

The camp also encourages friendship, teamwork, and a spirit of service. By spending time in a peaceful and spiritual atmosphere, children gain inspiration that helps them grow into responsible and compassionate individuals.

Our Rituals

“Rituals are bridges between devotion and discipline”

Rituals practiced at the Ashrama are deeply rooted in Sanatana Dharma and are performed with devotion, purity, and collective participation. These sacred practices help preserve spiritual traditions while nurturing inner discipline, harmony, and reverence for the divine.

Through daily Poojas, special homas, samskaras, and community rituals, devotees experience spiritual upliftment and a sense of belonging. Each ritual is conducted with clear intent—invoking peace, gratitude, and well-being for individuals and society at large.

“External worship and internal worship are really one and the same.” — Swami Vivekananda
